Morning Has Broken Like the First Day
51" x 58"

Morning Has Broken Like the First Day was made for a contest sponsored by the American Quilter's Society on using mariner's compasses in new ways. This was not one of the winning quilts, but I was pleased with the results. The sun is fussy-cut from a gold paisley print. The stars are 3", 4", and 5" mariner's compasses which I drafted, pieced, and then inset into the background fabric. The sun is hand quilted with gold metallic thread and the stars with silver metallic thread.

After piecing the basic section, I was discussing with a couple of friends my various ideas for borders. One of them said, "I really like the sun in the lower left corner. Why don't you just put borders on two sides." This gave me the inspiration for my borders
