Mariner's Compass — The Lainhart Way

For several years, I have been successfully teaching students to both draft and piece Mariner’s Compasses with my method. The instructions are for a 12-inch, 16-point Mariners Compass, but once students learn to draft a compass, they can make them in any size or number of points. This is an advanced quilt pattern. (23 pages)

Stacked Tops

14" x 36"

This small bargello wall-hanging is made by sewing strips in a sew-and-flip method to a base of the batting and backing basted together which quilts the wall-hanging as it is pieced. There are three pairs of “tops.” In each pair the same seven fabrics are used; one with the lightest fabric around the outside edge and one with the darkest fabric around the outside edge.

Midnight Cityscape

39" x 27"

A number of buildings appear against a nighttime sky. The sky is made from eight navy fabrics with stars or snowflakes on them. The buildings are made from eight fabrics from very light to medium in several color families. This wall-hanging is strip-pieced from left to right in a sew-and-flip method on a base of the batting and backing basted together. This method quilts the wall-hanging as it is pieced.

Snails in the Ferns

52" x 52"

Snail’s Trails has been a popular block for as long as people have been quilting. The basic block is not the pinwheel shape, but is instead a square made up of one arm of four different pinwheels. The blocks around the outside have one arm of a colored pinwheel and the other three arms are black. This sets off the rest of the blocks quite dramatically.
